July is almost upon us - the most summery of months. Although the year has turned and the days, almost imperceptibly at first, are already growing shorter, the days are warm and even sultry, the garden is at its best and the holiday season has arrived. Here in the UK, the school term ends in late July - the timetable decided by the Victorians, since back in the nineteenth century all hands were required to bring the harvest home. Things are somewhat different today of course, as children (and grown ups too) look forward to trips to the beach, picnics and barbeques and long afternoons spent in the garden. (often in my case with hoop and latest project in hand!)

And, thinking of projects - there are five new patterns in the July magazine that's published on Thursday. I'm still exploring different ideas for creating and using embroidery, and the colourful bugs in the top right hand corner feature on a pair of useful luggage tags - a unique look for your suitcase on the airport carasol this summer! I've also developed the idea of printing onto fabric (you only need the most basic of inkjet printers for this), with a quote (still topical and relevant today) from Jane Austen and there will be more patterns using this technique in future issues. The "Making a Splash" hoop was inspired by 1930's lidos - I've been reading a book about Chanel's Riviera - so beaches, lidos and villas have been very much in my mind this month.

And of course, as well as the projects there's a lot more besides between the covers. I really enjoyed researching the articles - I'm so pleased I live in the era of the electric iron after learning about smoothing stones, hot coals and flat irons. I discovered too that zip fasteners (or zippers) have only been around for a little over a century, and that Sicily is the home of the very best lemons - and the nicest limoncello too! There are lots of summery recipes, nature notes and much more too that I hope readers will enjoy.
